Deputy head teacher Andy Green, 61, has retired after spending 40 years of his career at Great Baddow High School. He joined the school in 1973 after graduating from Loughborough University, starting as a PE teacher. Also starting on the same day was trainee home economics teacher, Sue, who later became Mr Green's wife.
Andy, who is president of Chelmsford Rugby Club, now plans to go to Australia to watch the British Lions tour.
The Great Baddow Charity Races 2013

The Great Baddow Charity Races are now in their 29th year. The races consist of a 10 mile race and a 2 mile fun run through Great Baddow and Galleywood.
The races are organised by The Rotary Club Of Chelmsford Mildmay. Proceeds from the event are used to support charities working for local people. This year's charities included the Chelmsford Starfish Project, the Alzheimer's Society, Riding For The Disabled and Hargrave House.

In the Essex County Council elections held this month UKIP came
very close to defeating the Conservatives in Great Baddow. UKIP candidate
Jeanette Howes lost by just 72 votes to Conservative winner Jenny Chandler.
Voting for Great Baddow was as follows: Jenny Chandler (Con)
1440; Jeanette Howes (UKIP) 1368; Chris Rycroft (LD) 1191; Richard Hyland (Lab)
472; Darryl Newport (green) 152; Turnout 29.4%.

Great Baddow resident Tony Appleton
appeared on the ITV show ‘Food Glorious Food’ demonstrating his Bread and
Butter Pudding recipe that has passed down through four generations of his
family. The ex Navy man though, has added a boozy twist! One day he added rum
to his mother’s mixture, a vital tweak that he has kept in his version of the
dish ever since. The dish impressed judge Tom Parker
Bowles who awarded Tony a rosette for his efforts.

Serves: 4
Ingredients
4 oz dried fruit
3 tbsp good quality dark rum e.g Pusser’s rum
butter
4-6 slices white sliced bread, crusts removed
marmalade
1 x orange, zest only
1 x lemon, zest only
3 oz brown sugar
3 x large eggs
1 pint milk

Method
1. Soak the fruit in a bowl with the
rum for 1 hour.
2. Butter an ovenproof dish (8½ x 8½ x 2”). Drain the soaked fruit.
3. Butter the bread, then spread each
slice with marmalade. Cut each slice into four triangles.
Place one layer of bread in the prepared dish. Sprinkle with a third of the zests, sugar and fruit.
Repeat this step twice more to give three layers in total.

4. Beat the eggs and add the milk. Pour this mixture over the bread and allow
to soak for 1 hour.
5. Preheat the oven to 150°C/Gas mark
2, then bake the pudding on the middle shelf for 1 hour.
Serve with double
cream.

The roadworks at the junction of Baddow Road, Tabors Hill and Maldon Road outside the Blue Lion pub have caused traffic congestion through Great Baddow with a three way traffic light system in place. The work is estimated to last for three weeks.

What's Happening At Baddow Club?

(A 90th birthday celebration held recently in the Millennium Suite)
The Great Baddow Millennium Community Centre or the ‘Baddow
Club’ as it is better known was rebuilt in 2000 with the help of lottery
funding and, as most local residents know, is situated in the recreation ground.
The club has two main function rooms and a members bar with
Sky TV for all the sports action. The club provides regular entertainment every
fortnight with a variety of singing acts.
('The Caverners' proved very popular with their 60's music)
('Retrovox' also provided a great night of entertainment)
The club is also home to several teams – including football,
cricket, darts and crib – who play in local leagues. A very popular bingo night is also held on a Sunday
night every two weeks.There are also regular theatre trips and outings to places of interest.

There really is something for everyone at the ‘new look’
Marconi's. The club’s main hall (pictured above) is one of the largest wooden sprung dance floors in
Essex. Throughout the week there are dance classes for latin and ballroom, modern
jive, line dancing, salsa and on a Friday afternoon - a tea dance.
There are all-weather tennis courts, squash courts and snooker
tables and a members bar serving discounted drinks. Other activities include
Zumba fitness classes and bowls. Membership starts at £20 per year for a social
member.
